This roleplaying classic is a series of linked adventures forming one long and unforgettable Call of Cthulhu campaign. Horrifying deeds and dangerous sorcery dog those who dare attempt to unravel the fate of the Carlyle Expedition. The non-linear narrative keeps players baffled and on their toes. Action is the byword as the player-characters evade or combat cultists, magic, mad men, and the dread powers of the Outer Gods.

Masks of Nyarlathotep is a Lovecraftian exercise in horror and mystery. Set in 1925, adventures begin in New York, then move overseas to England, Egypt, Kenya Colony, Shanghai, and western Australia. Such extended globetrotting requires wit and planning by the players. Their investigators must have steady finances, good language skills, and a willingness to persevere despite governmental interference and cultist harassment. Meanwhile the keeper must bring to life different exotic locales, recreate the sensibilities of other cultures, and balance non-player-character foes and friends to allow each investigator to earn his or her own destiny — ultimate triumph, perhaps, or perhaps madness and agonizing death.

Masks of Nyarlathotep is a classic Call of Cthulhu campaign, run thousands of times over the years by thousands of different groups. So to change things up, we are tackling the campaign using Trail of Cthulhu. We’ve also added in many elements from other books. This is Masks as you’ve never seen before!

The Prequel Games

Before diving into the campaign cold, we started with a few scenarios. These prequel games establish who the characters are, why they know each other and why they’re looking into the Cthulhu Mythos.

Shanghai Bullets:A priest dies a horrible death in Shanghai. A disparate group of his friends and associates meet to find out the true cause of his death. They find a horrific artifact. Can they find it before the gangs of the city do?

Dream Factory Part 1: Barely fleeing Shanghai with their lives, the investigators soon find themselves in a case involving a missing actress.

Dream Factory Part 2: Cults and Hollywood do not mix, but stopping a powerful cult leader and rescuing the actress may be mutually exclusive goals.

Their cryptic allies have told them the cult owns a weapon that can destroy the cursed mirror in their possession, but what is it? Even if they find the weapon, their mission to rescue the actress from the clutches of the cult will be no easier. It is all building to a confrontation with the elusive leader of the cult, but will anyone survive to investigate certain events in New York in January 1925?

shaghaiedPrepare for adventure on the high seas and in distant lands in this special double length episode of Call of Cthulhu! It begins with a group of would-be gold prospectors in 1848 as they arrive in San Francisco. The trio enter the wrong bar and wind up on a merchant ship on its way to Shanghai. First off, the ship will travel to Rook island to load up on spices. The new sailors try to adapt to life on the high seas, but one of them refuses to work on principle. His eventual fate foreshadows the true horror that awaits the survivors when they arrive on the island. Both the plantation owner and the native tribesmen hold dark secrets. Can the hapless sailors survive the upcoming conflict?

The Sense of the Sleight-of-Hand Man is a full-length Call of Cthulhu (Sixth Edition) campaign of adventure, cosmic mystery, and deepest fear set in the Dreamlands of H.P. Lovecraft. The player characters—the Dreamers—explore the breadth of the otherworldly Dreamlands seeking a way back to the lives that they left behind. But can they survive the countless dangers of a world of dream—and the strange emnity of Nyarlathotep, the messenger and soul of the Outer Gods, when they fall under his capricious gaze?

It took the RPPR crew 7 sessions of play to complete the campaign, but we did not visit every area described in the book.

  • Episode 1: a group of opium addicts are thrown into the Dreamlands and realize they must journey far and wide if they are to return to the real world.
  • Episode 2: The dreamers reach the city of Inquanok only to find they must quest far from the safety of its walls if they are to proceed.
  • Episode 3: The ocean holds its own dangers, notably pirates. Infiltrating an island stronghold is easier said than done.
  • Episode 4: Even the relative safety of the city of Lhosk is illusionary. The Men from Leng lurk in its shadows waiting to ambush to the dreamers.
  • Episode 5: The underworld of the Dreamlands stretches before the dreamers. Darkness and ravenous monsters await. Who will survive the depths?
  • Episode 6: The dreamers surface in Ulthar, a city of relative peace. However, two immortal enemies await the dreamers.
  • Episode 7: The quest ends as it begins, in a restaurant in New York City. After all of this, can the dreamers reclaim their normal lives?
