It begins with a group of would-be gold prospectors in 1848 as they arrive in San Francisco. The trio enter the wrong bar and wind up on a merchant ship on its way to Shanghai. First off, the ship will travel to Rook island to load up on spices. The new sailors try to adapt to life on the high seas, but one of them refuses to work on principle. His eventual fate foreshadows the true horror that awaits the survivors when they arrive on the island. Both the plantation owner and the native tribesmen hold dark secrets. Can the hapless sailors survive the upcoming conflict?

inverse-worldInverse World is a setting for Dungeon World that adds a lot of new material to the game like skyships and robots. Of course, we had to give it a shot. In this one shot, an adventurous skyship crew finds themselves in trouble in regards when a certain Eternal Majestic Bastion of the Perfect Congress of the Lighted Legion…malfunctions. Can the adventurers save the day despite the explosions, angry police, rioting masses, and other trouble swarming around them?

After a long war, a formerly powerful nation struggles to rebuild. The switch from monarchy to a republic form of government has also raised tensions between the various political factions. In other words, this is the fantasy Weimar Republic. The new government has appointed a group of troubleshooters to find and capture a dissident leader. Can they find their man? Will he go quietly? The answer is no, we’re playing Dungeons and Dragons, not Dungeons and non-violent solutions to our problems. More background info on the game’s setting is available here.

In an antiques shop in North London, there is a box. Inside the box is an ancient creature, seeping through into the world. It will show the Investigators the universe as it really is. The Rending Box is the final Purist adventure for Trail of Cthulhu. The previous scenarios, The Dying of St Margaret’s, The Watchers in the Sky and The Dance In The Blood have hinted about an immense, fecund creature, spawning beneath the soil of the Lake District. In The Rending Box, the Investigators see that creature. Indeed, they may discover everything: the patterns behind the universe, the monsters older than time, the secrets that break your mind. And all they need to do is open a box.

33443rAt the end of the Civil War, two wounded Confederate veterans stumble through the wreckage of central Georgia, trying to get the passes they need to safely return home. When they arrive at an abandoned Union garrison at a remote plantation, they soon  realize that there may be worse things than Yankees lurking in the wake of Sherman’s march, and their war might not quite be over. Or maybe they’ll just find gold and get rich. That happens a lot in Call of Cthulhu, right?

This game was played after hours at Fear the Con 7. We started in the hotel lobby, and in the middle we had to move to a different (and much creepier) hotel. This is a very early playtest draft of the scenario, which has since been improved considerably.
