Slasher Flick: Synthtopia

SynthtopiaSpecial thanks to Review Cultist for the art! Check out his creepypasta review podcast, Al Dente Rigamortis.

The difference between a slasher flick and an action flick seems to be more about who you root for than anything else. Both genres thrive on unstoppable killing machines that murder their prey with near-impunity. In horror films, you root for the final girl to kill the slasher and live. In action films, you hope the hero murders all of the bad guys. But what if you were the bad guys? In the grimdark future of the 1980s, an artificial island called Synthtopia has been built by SomaTek, a giant mega-corporation. SomaTek plans to end the drug war by releasing a new synthetic drug called Soma that offers a safe and legal high 100 times better than any other drug. Naturally, the drug cartels have hired a gang of criminals to take Synthtopia down. But when the gang of 16 villains lands on the island, they will soon learn what it means to cross JACK SHADE, a mullet wearing hero who is more badass than any other man alive. Prepare for thrills, kills, and exciting plot twists in SYNTHTOPIA!

World of Darkness: Inherit

What's the Matter with Kansas? The Derek Bishop Chronicles continue! After surviving the events of Anderson Island, Derek and his motley crew of researchers track down rumors of a vampire in the college town of Manhattan, Kansas. Of course, things are not as they seem. Strange wind storms and disturbances plague the small city as Bishop and company pursue their investigation. Even though they have survived the supernatural before, can they survive an evil as strong as the wind itself?  (Special note: This is actually the second adventure of Derek Bishop. The Festival was posted out of order.)

Slasher Flick: The Festival

Wisely did Ibn Schacabao say, that happy is the tomb where no wizard hath lain, and happy the town at night whose wizards are all ashes. For it is of old rumour that the soul of the devil-bought hastes not from his charnel clay, but fats and instructs the very worm that gnaws; till out of corruption horrid life springs, and the dull scavengers of earth wax crafty to vex it and swell monstrous to plague it. Great holes secretly are digged where earth's pores ought to suffice, and things have learnt to walk that ought to crawl.Slasher Flick is an indie RPG that models slasher horror films. When former RPPR regular Thad showed up for a visit, I decided to revisit the Derek Bishop Chronicles using Slasher Flick. At South Padre Island, a group of skeptics and college students on Spring Break will soon be thrown into a hellish nightmare when a skeptic inadvertently summons a terrifying monster! As the killer eliminates his victims, one by one, can a group of students, drug dealers, hotel employees, and bros find a way to slay the monster?  Has Derek Bishop written his last chronicle? Find out in this special one shot!

World of Darkness: Anderson Island

Raven Releasing the Sun by Todd Jason BakerAfter our recent episode about the World of Darkness, I decided to return to it for a one shot. What I originally planned as a 2 to 3 hour game became a 5 hour epic and possible start of an episodic campaign

A group of writers and artists have traveled to Anderson Island, Washington in October 1980 for a retreat and workshop.  A place where they can work and study in peace. Little do they know of the evil buried on the island. After a night of shared nightmares, the first murder convinces a small group of writers to look into the secrets of the island, namely the secretive Christensen family and the ancient myths of Raven and Xelas. But can these temperamental creatives actually work together and solve the mystery or will they perish to the curse of Anderson Island?

Wushu: League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen 1988

Inspired by Top Shelf’s recent April Fool’s joke, I ran a one shot game on this Cinco de Mayo using Wushu, a rules light open ended system. The player characters were all iconic 80s heroes, including Doc Brown, Optimus Prime, Jack Burton, MacGuyver, and B.A. Baracus. They must stop Scarface and his army of Lost Boy vampires from taking over the world.
