Slasher Flick: Synthtopia

The difference between a slasher flick and an action flick seems to be more about who you root for than anything else. Both genres thrive on unstoppable killing machines that murder their prey with near-impunity. In horror films, you root for the final girl to kill the slasher and live. In action films, you hope the hero murders all of the bad guys. But what if you were the bad guys? In the grimdark future of the 1980s, an artificial island called Synthtopia has been built by SomaTek, a giant mega-corporation. SomaTek plans to end the drug war by releasing a new synthetic drug called Soma that offers a safe and legal high 100 times better than any other drug. Naturally, the drug cartels have hired a gang of criminals to take Synthtopia down. But when the gang of 16 villains lands on the island, they will soon learn what it means to cross JACK SHADE, a mullet wearing hero who is more badass than any other man alive. Prepare for thrills, kills, and exciting plot twists in SYNTHTOPIA!

A group of civilians, all stranger to each other, are invited for a chance to gain wealth and power. It turns out that a base raider believes that these strangers can bypass certain defensive systems in a villain’s lair that he cannot – super powered beings trigger security systems that normal humans do not. In order to access the base though, the civilians must pass an automated henchman recruiting test and only then can they secure the treasure of the base. But what isn’t the mysterious base raider telling the civilians about the base? What lies in the vault at the bottom of the base? Call of Cthulhu: Payday

Tom steps up to the plate to run yet another game of Call of Cthulhu. He’s calling it Desert Heist, but I write the show notes so it’s going up as Payday. Anyway, the player characters are criminals hired to steal a particular item from a FBI evidence storage warehouse. It’s a very straightforward job with no unseen complications. No, it’s the other thing, where there are tons of complications and twists. Enjoy!

Killer GMing has a face, and you must make a friend of Invincible NPCs and unbeatable traps. Horror and moral dilemmas are your friends. If they are not, then they are enemies to be feared. They are truly enemies…I watched a flail snail crawl along the edge of a vorpal sword. That’s my dream. That’s my nightmare. Crawling, slithering, along the edge of a +5 magical weapon . . . and surviving.
